The development of electric cars has come a long way over the last few years.
Driving ranges are now closer than ever to matching their petrol and diesel counterparts, while some electric cars actually exceed them for performance and speed.
But there’s one particular aspect which electric cars cannot match their gas-powered alternatives: weight.
Electric cars are so much heavier than petrol and diesel cars because of their enormous batteries, which can sometimes double the weight of a vehicle.
Other technologies, including improved chassis reinforcement, battery protection and modified suspension systems, also contribute to increased weight.
But which electric cars are the heaviest, and just how much do they weigh? We’ve compiled a list of all of the bulkiest EVs for your reading pleasure. Read on to find out more…

15. Hongqi E-HS9 - 2777kg (6122 lb)
The Hongqi E-HS9 is the Chinese carmaker’s enormous luxury electric SUV. In a sense, the brand is portrayed as China’s very own Rolls-Royce.
Offered with a range of batteries, the heaviest Hongqi weighs 2777kg (6122 lb) and is available with a 120kWh battery in Long-Range specification. The range is 515km (320 miles), and power is sent to two electric motors for 515bhp.
The Hongqi comes equipped with a lot of features as it targets the premium market. This includes adaptive suspension to improve comfort, a 360-degree camera, up to seven seats and a head-up display.

14. Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB - 2780 kg (6129 lb)
The ID Buzz marked a return for the German car maker’s Type 2 van, but with battery power for the first time. Its design is clearly inspired by VW’s retro bus of old.
Affectionately known as the 'Microbus' or 'hippy van', the Buzz takes its name from VW's iconic 1949 Type 2 'Bus'. This vehicle garnered a decades-long cult following and deeply influenced popular culture.
In seven-seat long-wheelbase form, the ID Buzz weighs in at 2780kg (6129 lb). It offers incredible levels of space and versatility, which makes that figure easier to swallow.
Opting for the seven-seat configuration allows for the removal of the third row, expanding the cargo capacity to 1340 litres. This represents a 219-litre increase compared to the short-wheelbase model.

13. Nio ES8 Long - 2800 kg (6173 lb)
Seven-seat SUVs are always going to be heavy, and the Nio ES8 is no exception.
Produced in China as a rival to the Audi E-tron and Tesla Model X, the ES8 has been on sale since 2018.
It weighs 2800kg (6173kg) and is very much aimed towards the premium market, with luxurious seats, clever digital technology (including video streaming) and respectable build quality.
With its 102kWh battery, the ES8 can cover 634km (394 miles) on a charge. It will also hit 0-100kph (0-62mph) in just 3.97 seconds, thanks to a dual-motor powertrain producing 641bhp.

12. Volvo EX90 - 2811kg (6197 lb)
The Volvo XC90 has been a big seller for Volvo for a long time now, so it's no surprise the large SUV has survived into the era of electric cars.
It’s a big beast of a car, though. It weighs in at 2811kg (6197 lb), making it one of the heaviest cars to come out of Europe.
Its weight is in part down to its large battery, which measures 107kWh. Volvo claims a range of around 601km (374 miles).

11. Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV (2900 kg (6393 lb)
The Mercedes EQS SUV is one of the most luxurious cars on sale in its basic form, but the Maybach edition adds a whole new level of opulence.
If you can muster up the £200,000 (230,121.33 euros, $266,962.10 USD) to buy one, the EQS SUV Maybach will treat you with a champagne cooler, stainless steel pedals and folding tables.
The EQS SUV Maybach gets a 108kWh battery with up to 600km (373 miles of range). It also uses two electric motors to produce 659bhp and 701lb ft, with four-wheel drive.

10. Lordstown Endurance - 2926 kg (6451 lb)
European drivers will likely never have heard of the Lordstown Endurance, which is a pick-up that was produced by US startup Lordstown.
Production didn’t last long; the model was axed in 2023 after just three years, and just 450 examples were built.
It was powered by a 109kWh battery, which contributed heavily to its 2926 kg (6451 lb) kerbweight. The range was rated at a pathetic 280km (174 miles).

9. Rolls-Royce Spectre - 2975 kg (6559 lb)
The Rolls-Royce Spectre might not be the heaviest car on this list, but it’s certainly the most luxurious.
Almost everything feels expensive in the Spectre, from its unique upholstery to its high levels of technology.
Its 120kWh battery is capable of 329 miles of range, but you’d be wise to expect less than that in the real world.
From its two electric motors, the Spectre produces 577bhp and 660lb ft, dealing with its almost three-tonne kerb weight with ease, hitting 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 4.5sec.

8. Mercedes G580 EQ - 3085 kg (6801 lb)
If you looked at the Mercedes G580 EQ, you would be forgiven for thinking that it was just another G-Class.
It’s the first car on our list to weigh over three tonnes, and that’s down to a combination of four electric motors and a big 116kWh battery.
Due to its enormous weight, the G580 is capable of 450km (280 miles) on a charge, which is considerably less than most options you’ll read about later on in this list.
From its four motors, the G580 produces 579bhp and 859lb ft. It makes the EV only a little less powerful than the V8-engined G63.

7. Tesla Cybertruck - 3104kg (6843 lb)
Tesla’s bizarre, futuristic pick-up truck is the brand’s heaviest car by some margin, weighing just significantly over three tonnes.
The Cybertruck gets 593bhp as standard, with all-wheel drive from two electric motors. The Cybertruck Beast gets 834bhp from a tri-motor set-up. The Beast can hit 0-100kph (0-62mph) in just 2.6 seconds.
With a battery estimated at around 122kWh, the Cybertruck gets a claimed range of around 523km (325 miles).
Tesla says the Cybertruck is capable of towing up to 4989kg (11,000 lb), with a cargo load capacity of 1133kg (2500 lb).

6. Ford F-150 Lightning 3127kg (6893 lb)
At 3127kg (6893 lb), the Ford F-150 Lightning narrowly misses out on the top five in our list of the world’s heaviest electric cars.
It carries twin electric motors with 563bhp and 77lb ft available, which shifts the American behemoth from 0-100pkh (0-62mph) in around 4.0 seconds.
According to Ford, the F-150 Lightning can complete 482km (300 miles) on a charge, should you opt for the 131kWh battery. A 98kWh unit is also available.

5. Rivian R1T - 3152kg (6949 lb)
The Rivian R1T props up the top five heaviest cars on sale today, weighing in at 3152kg (6949 lb). It’s also one of the most powerful pick-up trucks on sale.
Available with either dual or tri-motor powertrains, the spaceship-like RT1 produces up to 850bhp and 1103lb ft in its most powerful specification.
The R1T gets a choice of three battery packs, but the biggest gets a 140kWh capacity with a range of 675km (420 miles).
As for towing, the R1T can pull 4989kg (11,000 lb). Payload capacity is rated at 800kg (1764 lb).

4. Chevrolet Silverado EV - 3870kg (8532 lb)
Fans of huge pick-up trucks will likely find a friend in the Chevrolet Silverado, which is one of the heaviest cars on sale.
Like many of the remaining cars on our list, the Silverado uses General Motors’ massive 205kWh battery, which is one of the biggest and heaviest units available in a passenger car.
According to GM, the Silverado promises up to 791km (492 miles) of range on a charge. Power is sent to two electric motors with all-wheel drive. In total, the Silverado produces 754bhp and 785lb ft.
Pick-up truck drivers likely want to be able to tow things too, and the Silverado doesn’t disappoint. It can tow up to 5669kg (12,500 lb) and its payload capacity stands at 816kg (1800 lb).

3. Cadillac Escalade iQ - 3991kg (8798 lb)
The massive Cadillac Escalade iQ is one of the heaviest cars money can buy, matching the GMC Sierra EV at 3991kg (8798 lb).
It features two electric motors producing 750bhp and 785lb ft, along with a 205kWh battery. According to Cadillac, the Escalade iQ can travel up to 740km (460 miles) on a charge.
Despite its weight, drivers can expect the Escalade to travel from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 4.5sec, and on to a top speed of 112mph.

2. GMC Sierra EV - 3991kg (8798 lb)
The GMC Sierra EV shares much of its underpinnings with the Hummer EV, meaning it comes with an absolutely massive 205kWh battery.
Range stands at a claimed 708km (440 miles) in its most efficient specification, and it can also charge rapidly at speeds of up to 350kW.
The Sierra EV weighs 3991kg (8798 lb). Regardless of the sheer mass this EV produces, it will still hit 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 4.1 seconds and 0-160kph in 10 seconds.

1. GMC Hummer EV - 4111kg (9063 lb)
The GMC Hummer EV is the world’s heaviest electric car, weighing in at a staggering 4111kg (9083lb). That’s as heavy as a fully-grown Asian elephant.
It’s certainly quicker than Asia’s largest land mammal. The Hummer EV comes with a choice of two or three electric motors, with all-wheel drive and as much as 1000bhp.
That means it will hit 0-100kph (0-62mph) in just 3.3 seconds, which is mindboggling on paper and even more so behind the wheel.
Much of its unbelievable weight comes from its 205kWh battery, which produces up to 500km (311 miles) of range on a charge. The battery itself weighs 1300kg (2866 lb), which is about the same as a Volkswagen Golf.
