The coolest electric cars at the 2025 Tokyo motor show

Every two years, Japan hosts its biggest motor show in its bustling capital city of Tokyo.

The Tokyo motor show has long been a thriving hub for new car reveals, and 2025’s event was no different. 

We've put together a list of all the coolest, most important new electric vehicles that were unveiled at this year’s show. 

Don’t worry, it isn’t all just boring SUVs. Tokyo also played host to several high-performance sports car concepts and lightweight electric bikes, so you’re definitely going to want to check these out… 

Toyota Century Limo

Toyota has revealed a luxury grand-tourer to mark the creation of its new Century luxury brand.

The new model is the third dedicated Century model and follows the flagship saloon, which has been in production since 1967, and the Bentley Bentayga-sized SUV, which was first revealed in 2023. 

The concept car, similar in size to a Bentley Continental GT but with a slightly elevated stance, boasts an opulent three-seat interior accessed by sliding doors.

Its cabin blends analogue and digital features, highlighting its bespoke, high-end craftsmanship, though specific details about the concept remain limited.

Toyota Corolla

Toyota's best-selling Corolla hatchback is set for a dramatic redesign with its 13th generation. 

The new hatchback will feature an updated look, advanced interior technology, and a choice of either electric (EV) or internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains.

The Corolla is already the world’s best-selling car, with more than 50 million examples sold since it launched in 1966. It will drastically change shape and major on flexibility as it gears up to take on the next Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Octavia in the coming years.

Redesigned in line with Toyota's sharp new design language and completely removed from today's car, the new Corolla has been previewed by a concept at the Tokyo motor show, which reveals that the new model will be a complete rethink inside and out.

Honda Super-N

Next year, Honda plans to introduce an electric city car designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts, featuring a simulated gearshift system. 

This new model, a future rival to the new Renault Twingo, has been extensively showcased as the Super-N prototype at the Tokyo motor show. 

The Super-N is an evolution of the Super EV Concept, which was previously demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer.

The related N-One E adheres to kei car regulations, measuring just under 3400mm in length, making it approximately 200mm shorter than the Fiat 500e. 

While Honda has not confirmed if the Super-N will adopt the N-One E's 63bhp electric motor, it has been verified that the new model will include a Boost mode.

Lexus LS SUV

Lexus revealed several new concept cars at this year’s Tokyo motor show, including a large electric SUV which would go head-to-head with rivals from BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. 

The high-riding, premium SUV would be a natural rival for the BMW iX and Porsche Cayenne EV, although Lexus hasn’t publicly revealed any performance details or dimensions. 

Whether it makes production or not, this LS coupe concept is still important for showcasing the brand’s potential future products. 

The Coupé's interior boasts three widescreen digital displays, with two for the driver and a third, retractable screen for the passenger. These displays operate on Lexus's next-generation infotainment system.

Further emphasising performance and ongoing development, the car also features a yoke-style steering wheel, hinting at advancements in the RZ's steer-by-wire system, and a sports-style driver's seat.

Mazda Vision X-Coupe

It wouldn’t be a Japanese car show without Mazda, and the company has well and truly delivered this year. 

The car maker revealed a sports saloon concept with 503bhp and a rotary-electric powertrain, promising up to 500 miles of range in total. 

Named the Vision X-Coupe, the concept is a sleek four-door car clearly derived from the striking Iconic SP sports car concept revealed back in 2023. 

No solid details of performance have been revealed, but the car uses a turbocharged two-rotor engine as part of a plug-in hybrid system, which is said to be capable of travelling 100 miles with the engine off.

Lexus LS MPV

The Lexus LS has long stood as the Japanese car maker’s flagship saloon model, but it has now been reimagined as a luxury MPV with six wheels. 

Redefining the idea of a luxury car, the striking new VIP shuttle has been designed as a "private sanctuary" that "invites you to discover your own space", Lexus says. 

It also previews a dramatic revamp of the brand's design hallmarks and positioning, as traditional saloons fall out of favour with luxury car buyers globally. Lexus clearly wants to take advantage of the influx of MPV buyers.

The LS concept is primarily designed as a chauffeur-driven vehicle. It features an unusual steering yoke, suggesting the use of by-wire steering, similar to the Lexus RZ. The interior also boasts a wraparound digital display and prominent buttons for essential vehicle controls.

While no technical specifications or dimensions have been released, and there's no official word on production plans, the LS concept likely utilises a version of Toyota's E-TNGA modular architecture, sharing components with other mainstream EVs in the brand's lineup.

Subaru Performance-E STI

Subaru has offered a look into the future of its STI performance brand with a striking new sports car concept.

Named the Performance-E STI, the carmaker said it "represents the future of the performance scene, spearheading Subaru's new generation". 

Subaru's new concept, a rakish four-door fastback, hints at a potential successor to the Legacy, a model sold outside the UK for six years.

While few details have been released, Subaru emphasises its design draws from the brand's heritage, offering a "driver-friendly layout and a comfortable, spacious interior." 

The concept is also expected to feature two driven axles, reflecting the STI brand's commitment to four-wheel-drive, rally-inspired performance. This concept does not appear to be based on any existing production model.

Lexus Micro LS

Don’t rub your eyes too hard - this is supposedly an electric vehicle! Also from Lexus, this machine indicates a potential entry into the single-seater market.

The brand is exploring ways of making the luxury saloon experience as small as possible. Named the Micro LS concept, it’s a vision of how its trademark design cues and luxury ethos could translate into an urban microcar format to give "a luxury mobility experience for one.”

Lexus has revealed a three-wheeled vehicle, approximately 2.5 metres in length – similar to the Citroën Ami – and only marginally wider than its single seat. Technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.

It features a leather, armchair-style reclining seat; a huge vertical display and control screen (where a steering wheel would ordinarily be); floors and walls finished in bamboo; and a bespoke glassware set for drinks on the move.

Mazda Vision X-Compact

Mazda has unveiled a compact hatchback concept at the Tokyo motor show, which could serve as a precursor to the next Mazda 2 supermini. 

The company's chief technical officer has expressed a strong desire to bring this concept to production, but it hasn’t confirmed whether it would have electric power. Our fingers are certainly crossed. 

The Vision X-Compact, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, is a new vehicle with dimensions of 3.8m in length, 1.8m in width, and 1.5m in height. These measurements make it slightly smaller than the previous Mazda 2, which was discontinued earlier this year, leaving the Toyota Yaris-based 2 Hybrid as the only model of its kind available for purchase.

Mazda has stated that the hatchback "represents Mazda's vision for the future of smart mobility," though no technical specifications have been released.

Daihatsu Midget X

How’s this for a small electric car? Daihatsu has publicly presented the Midget X at the Tokoyo motor show, which is designed to bring the ageing car company into the electric era.

The Midget name has been around since 1957, when it adorned an even smaller, three-wheeled vehicle, which whizzed around the tight streets of Japan with ease, for deliveries or personal use. 

With a central driving position and two passenger seats on either side, the Midget X uses a yoke steering wheel with a very minimalist interior design.

No performance or powertrain details have been confirmed yet, but expect the Midget X to get similar performance to Europe’s Citroen Ami.

Honda EV Outlier

Honda’s Outlier concept is a showcase of what a potential electric motorcycle would look like beyond 2030.

It uses in-wheel motors on both the front and rear wheels, which the firm says achieves dynamic and low proportion styling. For the everyman, it basically means a serious improvement to aerodynamics. 

The bike also gets an expensive-looking digital display, which will present your speed, remaining charge and odometer readings. Smartphone connectivity is also included, with Bluetooth.

Honda Alpha 0

Honda describes the Alpha 0 SUV as an SUV that “will blend beautifully with both urban and natural environments”. 

Basically, it will be a versatile, all-round performer, which will be aimed squarely at the Japanese and Indian markets.

Honda clearly wants this SUV to represent comfort and class for drivers and passengers. The vehicle features integrated screen areas at both the front and rear. The front screen area combines traditionally separate components like headlights, the charging lid, and the illuminated emblem. 

Like many of the other cars on our list, there are no performance or powertrain details revealed yet.

BYD Racco

The Racco is BYD’s first electric K-Car, designed for the streets of Japan. 

Packed with four seats and four doors, the Racco uses a 20kWh battery with around 180km (111 miles) of range. 

Power is sent to a front-mounted electric motor, which is restricted by kei car rules to 63bhp. We’re not sure how fast it is, but you can bet it will be reasonably nippy around town. 

It’s a shame it is only going to Japan, because we would love to see the Racco in Europe and other international markets. 

Nissan Ariya

The Nissan Ariya gets an update!

On sale since 2022, the electric SUV gets a wide-reaching overhaul with a slight exterior facelift, plus new technology.

Updates include a new Google-powered infotainment system, V2L capabilities, plus new suspension changes, which means it will be more comfortable than before.
