2 Mar 2022

Micromobility firm Bird, which operates e-scooter and e-bike rental schemes in more than 350 cities globally, has introduced its first retail e-bike to the UK market.

The new Bird Bike, which will initially exclusively be sold in the UK by Halfords, has been developed in-house by the California-based firm. It features a 250W Bafang motor on the rear hub, allowing for electric assist at speeds of up to 15.5mph and a 36Wh battery offering a range of up to 62 miles.

The Bird Bike also features a seven-speed Shimano drivetrain, front and rear Tektro disc brakes, Kendals Kwick K Shield+ puncture-resistant tyres, integrated LED lights and a backlit handlebar dash display. It can be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing certain controls to be operated via the Bird app.

Costing £1999, the Bird Bike will launch with a step-over A-Frame version, with a V-frame design following this summer. In-store teams at Halfords will assemble the bike prior to customer collection. Halfords added that buyers will also “experience a number of service benefits” as part of the exclusive agreement.

Bird is one of the biggest e-scooter and e-bike rental firms in the USA, with an increasing presence in Europe. It currently has a small presence in the UK, operating a government-approved e-scooter trial scheme in Redditch.

In the UK it also sells the Birdie, a non-electric kids scooters.
