Storedot reveals new battery tech to extend battery lifespan

27 Jan 2022

Israeli firm Storedot has revealed new advanced technology it claims can extend the lifespan of batteries during the vehicles life - and will also aid batteries for ‘second life’ applications.

Storedot recently revealed its new extreme fast charging (XFC) batteries which the firm says can be charged in as little as 10 minutes.

The battery developer has now created new technology to ensure that its silicon-based batteries maintain a high performance for many years, without any significant impact on the vehicle's range.

Storedot says that “a robust performance is maintained” even after 1000 cycles and 80% capacity, adding that after this many cycles, rival lithium-ion fast charging technologies start to deteriorate in performance.

300 miles of range in 10 minutes? It could happen sooner than you think

After further analysis the company found that after 1700 cycles, Storedot's batteries maintained 70% of the original capacity.

The firm believes that, thanks to the batteries' ability to maintain performance after a number of cycles, they would be effective in second life usage for applications such as energy storage and grid load balancing.

“We now have the ability to hugely extend the life of our batteries, long after their vehicle service life,” said Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO.

“Not only will this transformative development encourage more people to drive EVs, but this technology has huge benefits for sustainability too, reducing the need to retire and recycle an expensive component that can now serve in critical second life applications.”

StoreDot is currently in talks with a number of car manufacturers and aims to deliver mass-produced XFC batteries by 2024.
