Electric, connected and autonomous: meet the yard tractor of the future

24 Jan 2022

Specialst vehicle manufacturer Terberg has helped to convert an electric yard trailer to feature 5G connectivity, as part of a project to develop emission-free autonomous logistics vehicles.

The 5G Connected and Automated Logistics (CAL) project has worked with Terberg to retrofit a YT202 electric yard trailed – designed for moving trailers in distribution centres, transport depots and container terminals – with advanced connectivity technology.

The project will be tested in Sunderland and is part of the 5G Create competition, which combines British creativity with innovative new uses for 5G as part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport's £200 million 5G Testbeds and Trials programme (5GTT).

By implementing 5G technology, Terberg is hoping to become one of the first manufacturers to bring remotely operated HGVs to market.

Streetdrone has fitted a Terberg YT202 with drive-by-wire components and a number of sensors and cameras, including a LiDAR unit.

The autonomous Terberg YT202 will be trialed on the road to see how it copes with roundabouts, security gates, traffic lights, bridges and junctions - all key tests which the firm says will help to “accelerate the development of advanced autonomous systems”.

The 5G CAL project recently showcased the new Terberg YT202 at Cenex, the UK’s premier low carbon vehicle event.

“Having the vision to look to the future and to what it may offer is allowing us to leverage the benefits that smart technology can bring to the Sunderland region and further afield,” said Alisdair Couper, managing director at Terberg DTS UK.

Sunderland Council’s chief executive, Patrick Melia, added: “5G CAL’s partnership with Terberg is yet another encouraging milestone in the Sunderland Our Smart City success story and in particular, our pioneering 5G CAL project.”
