Hyundai and Kia to develop ‘next-gen’ EV-only tyres

20 Jun 2022

The Hyundai Motor Group will partner with Michelin to develop ‘next-generation’ tyres specifically for use on future electric vehicles.

The Korean car giant and the French tyre firm have been working together since 2017 to develop all-weather tyres specifically for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but have now signed a memorandum of understanding to expand the partnership.

The three-year project will involve Hyundai and Michelin working on developing new tyres optimised for electric vehicles, tyres featuring a greater amount of eco-friendly materials and a new real-time tyre monitoring system for use on future advanced autonomous vehicles.

“This partnership with Michelin will result in real innovations in tyre technology, solidifying Hyundai Motor Group’s position as a leader in the smart mobility industry,” said Hyundai Motor Group vice-president Bong-Soo Kim.

The two firms say that the collaboration will lead to next-generation tyres that will be used on future premium EV models from the Hyundai Motor Group, which also includes Kia and Genesis. It added that the new technology will ensure that the durability requirements of tyres for heavier EVs can be met as the driving range of EVs increases.

The two firms will also conduct joint analysis on tyre wear, tyre load and road friction, and say they will “significantly improve” ride comfort by reducing vibrations and noise. They also claim the new tyres will use around 50 per cent eco-friendly materials, up from around 20 per cent at the moment.
