UK-based engineering firm Equipmake has showcased its latest pure electric technology in the form of a converted Volvo double-decker bus.
Unveiled for the first time, the all-electric bus features the firm’s new repower solution to convert existing combustion-engined machines, which has been developed at its factory in Norfolk.
The repower technology programme involves taking an existing hybrid or diesel bus and fitting it with an electric drivetrain and battery.
Each bus is inspected to ensure its adaptability to the firm’s scalable modular electric chassis. Equipmake says its process is quick, with up to five repowers being completed each week to ensure vehicles are kept off the road for the shortest time possible.
The repower process is tailored to the specific operator requirements, with service routes simulated to ensure the correct battery power level is selected for optimum performance and efficiency.
Equipmake says the electric double decker should offer a guaranteed driving range of 150 to 250 miles.
“Repowering is an important and cost-effective transitionary technology that can bridge the gap between diesel and a new electric bus fleet,” said Equipmake managing director Ian Foley.
“We know there is a clear appetite for the technology, with strong demand from operators, which is leading to the expansion of our facilities in Norfolk.
Equipmake also offers an all-new electric bus called the Jewel E, which has been developed in collaboration with Spanish bus manufacturer Beulas. The Jewel E has a modular battery pack and has battery options of up to 543kWH, with a maximum range of 300 miles on a single charge.
It will soon begin in-service trials with London operator Go-Ahead later this year.
